St. Thomas Bell Rings Again

For more than half a century, the bell in the bell tower at St. Thomas Anglican Church has been a voice of faith in the Richland community, north of Pittsburgh. Erected in 1968, the tower was built to house a bell generously donated by the Brothers of St. Barnabas. From its first toll, the St. Thomas bell has done far more than mark the hours—it has called neighbors to worship, celebrated joyful unions, and comforted hearts in times of sorrow. Its sound has been a familiar and reassuring reminder of God’s presence in our midst.

The bell itself, however, carries a deeper history than its more recent placement suggests. Cast in 1888 in Pittsburgh by A. Fulton’s Son & Co. (bell and brass founders), the bell was originally made for the Second Ward Public School in the City of Allegheny (now part of Pittsburgh). Though records of that first chapter are scant, the founding firm’s roots in the region lend the bell a strong connection to western Pennsylvania’s industrial and educational heritage.

In recent years, however, the bell began to show its age. After decades of faithful service, it fell silent—the mechanisms worn and the structure in need of careful restoration. The silence was deeply felt by parishioners and neighbors alike, who had grown accustomed to its steady rhythm.

Thanks to the generosity and dedication of the St. Thomas congregation, the bell and tower have now been beautifully refurbished. Expert craftsmen with All State Clock & Bell restored its tone and function while preserving the original character. On Sunday, October 19, the congregation gathered to bless and celebrate the return of this cherished symbol of our faith.

As its clear voice rings out once more across Richland, the St. Thomas bell reminds us that God’s presence is timeless. Join us in praying that its sound continues to inspire joy, peace, and unity.
