GAFCON Communique: The Future Has Arrived

October 23, 2025

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Last week, the GAFCON primates issued a statement about the reordering of the Global Anglican Communion. You can read that communication here. The statement clearly sets a course for that reordering under a Global Anglican Communion Council of Primates. While this may seem like a sudden and radical development, it is neither.

From its beginning, the leadership of GAFCON has called the wider Anglican Communion to repentance on issues of biblical authority and its understanding of marriage and sexuality.

From its beginning, the leadership of GAFCON has affirmed that the foundation of orthodox Anglican Christian belief must be the Scriptures; that the current Instruments of Communion have failed, particularly in holding to the doctrine and discipline of the Anglican Communion; and that, unless there is repentance, communion is impossible and an alternate structure will be needed. None of this is new.

This development, or one very like it, was inevitable in our communion unless there was movement toward repentance.

What is different is that we now have a clear declaration of a way forward. The statement does not talk about what needs to happen or might happen someday, but rather puts forward a plan for the future.

What does this mean for us practically? For us in the ACNA, not a lot is different. Since its inception, we have been aligned with the GAFCON movement and in communion with them and, through them, the vast majority of Anglican believers worldwide. So for the average Anglican in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, whether lay or clergy, nothing is different.

We are still called to continue to make disciples of Jesus Christ. I want to commend you all to the ongoing faithful work of gospel proclamation, catechesis, and pastoral care, which you have been diligently engaging in week in and week out.

My prayer continues to be that we as Anglicans simply continue to proclaim Christ crucified and reach our neighbors with His transforming love.

O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese to be a good and godly fellowship of faith. Bless our clergy and all our people. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully administered and faithfully received. By your Spirit, fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 647)

Grace and peace to you,

The Right Reverend Alex W. Cameron
Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh
